Ashaval, Karnavati, Ahmedabad ……………….. the largest city of Gujarat state is know by all these different names since its foundation on 4th March, 1411 . Four pious men named Ahmed laid the foundation of the city, one of them was the Sultan Ahmed Shah. An amusing tale seeks the explanation of foundation of Ahmedabad: Once Sultan Ahmed Shah was camping on the banks of river Sabarmati. Surprisingly he saw a hare being chased by his doges, turning around in defiance and confronting their attackers. On the advice of  the saint that the site would be auspicious one for the rule Sultan decided to build a new capital on the banks of river Sabarmati. The foundation ceremony of the city was blessed by Sheikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh of Sarkhej- the spiritual advisor of Sultan and twelve Qalandar fakirs who were the direct disciples of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya of Delhi . History revealed that the site of the present city has been occupied by Ashaval in the 11th century, founded by Asha Bhil, a local tribal Chief. In 13th century Karna  Solanki, King of Gujarat, captured city and named it after him as Karnavati.

Today, the commercial capital of the Gujarat State and 7th largest city of India has its own indefinable    charm, combining many traditional elements and the latest international blend. The present city is divided by the river Sabarmati in two parts, Eastern & Western Ahmedabad. The old city- eastern Ahmedabad  -reflects a superb social & architectural combination of Muslim, Hindu and Jain. Later the newer areas – western Ahmedabad- 2developed with more contemporary designs of architectures on the other bank of river. The famous French architect Le Corbusier designed several public & private building like IIMA and ATIRA. Ahmedabad was the capital of the state until the new capital city Gandhinagar was constructed.  The city was renowned as “Manchester of India” because of its leading textile industry.

Under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, Ahmedabad played a major role in the freedom movement against the British. And every resident of Ahmedabad is proud of this fact. As a famous local poet Avinash Vyas says :

Ame Amdavadi ……………………….

(We, residents of Ahmedaabd )

Jyanu Pani Lavyu tani, Bharat ni Azadi

(who forced the freedom of India ……. From the british )

Ame Amdavadi…………….

(We, residents of Ahmedabad)
